Origin

What's in a name? From the German language, Speicher translates literally to storage, whether it be spatial, metaphysical, or electronic. One account of the Speicher name origin appears in "A Brief History of the Speicher Family" written in 1941 by Paul Speicher of Wabash, Indiana. In short, Speicher writes that his family can be traced back to a Catholic priest who, seeking sanctuary from religious persecution, hid in a granary (a "Speicher") at a farm in Switzerland and changed his name accordingly. Whether the story is meant to imply that all Speichers descend from this refugee priest, or that it only applies to the Speichers of Wabash, is unclear to this author.
